The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my successes and failures is to be kind. We need to be more understanding and patient with each other. We get so caught up in our own lives, our own points of view, in being monkeys just trying to get through the day. It’s easy to dismiss people, get frustrated. We need to be open to whomever or whatever is in front of us, to slow down, accept, and try to understand.
Working in theatre should create an atmosphere of sympathy and understanding. As anyone in theatre can tell you, it is a crazy and demanding life, and it becomes very easy to forget to be kind when something isn’t going perfectly. Choosing to be kind can shift the way you relate to people. I’m not perfect at it by any means, but it has become a central tenant of how I try to operate.
