We are longtime Barrie residents who partake in the recreational opportunities our city provides. Over the years we have both played in the men and women’s ice hockey and baseball leagues.
A few years ago, we decided to become volunteers for the Barrie Out of the Cold program. This program provides a safe environment in local churches for people to have a hot meal and a place to sleep overnight throughout the winter months. It’s run by volunteers and relies on donations. We have seen there are many people in need of this service and the need increases every year.
The feeling we get when we’ve helped make the difference in someone’s life, whether it be for a minute or an hour or two, is indescribable…let’s just say it’s a good feeling! We have listened to some of the homeless guests tell their story without passing judgement, and tend to appreciate our own lives a little bit more.
In addition, I (Cheryl) volunteer with the David Busby Street Centre Outreach Van throughout the year. The Busby Centre helps, not only the homeless, but others who struggle and face challenges in their lives. They have an incredible staff who never stop and never give up on anyone.
We highly recommend to anyone who wants to give back that volunteering for either of these organizations will not only make a difference in other people’s lives but your own as well.
