i have always been drawn to kitchens

My happy place.

Kitchens. I have always been drawn to kitchens. Kitchens are the heart of the home. They are warm and inviting, and full of wonderful sights, sounds, smells and tastes. I am a foodie and so naturally always thought it was about my passion for food. I now realize it is really about the memories, feelings, conversations and the sharing that takes place in a kitchen.

As a child growing up on a dairy farm, Saturday was always baking day (because a meal wasn’t complete without dessert). I have special memories of my sister and me chatting and baking with our grandma or mom and learning about recipes and measurements. Of course now I realize we were learning about much more than cooking. We were learning about life through the conversations, stories, wisdom and advice. Of course, we didn’t realize that until years later.

I’m a mom of two, Justin and Emily, and I loved spending time in the kitchen with them – whether it was cooking or having a meal together to share each other’s day. It was really history repeating itself, and hopefully, they took away some life lessons as I did as a child.

As a friend, so many memories are created between girlfriends over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, with laughter and tears, and shared hopes, fears and dreams.

And for me, weekend mornings you will find me up early, pouring through cookbooks or websites discovering new recipes to make and share. One day I realized that cooking, and sharing what I create with family and friends, is a big way I show my love. The kitchen is definitely my happy place!

And remember: what happens in the kitchen, stays in the kitchen!
