advice i’d give young people today

I want to begin by sharing about advice. Rather than advice, I want to call it guidance or encouragement, because I think to just give advice can risk disempowering an individual. It can disempower them from making their own decisions, which in turn, could cause resentment or bitterness.

Let’s equip one another for the cause of empowerment!

Back to the point…

If I could encourage young people today, I would share with them something that has influenced me in a positive way and hope that they can relate.

Pursuing the gifts I was given by Creator, has changed my life. “Do not deprive the world of your gifts,” is a quote that lingers in my mind. I used to ask myself what it means to have a gift and wonder what mine is. I would connect having a gift to being musically inclined, or being a really good painter. This would result in me pondering the possibility that I did not have a gift at all. The truth is, we could be good at anything if we apply ourselves but there is no denying that we are all “naturals” at something. We all have a purpose.

It is possible to have more than one gift and I think one of the best ways to find out what they are, is through relationship – those closest to you. I bet a couple of people came to your mind right away. It’s those individuals who know you well and can help you figure out what you’re naturally good at or where you have potential to get better. Sometimes it’s a matter of reorienting your mind and changing your habits, or tapping into different parts of your brain to discover things you never really knew you were capable of. There is a lot of untapped potential in this world, so I urge you to not be afraid to try new things.

Ultimately, I believe that our gifts are connected to our purpose. What are you passionate about? What makes your heart beat fast when you talk about it? I promise, if you dig down deep enough, practicing solitude and the art of reflection, as well as connecting with others, your gifts will float to the surface of your being and begin to shine through. You may even realize how much this life is not really just about you after all but instead, about serving others in a good way.

Whatever you do, do it with love and I believe it is in this way that you will be satisfied.
